Child Star Barbara Miguel wins Best Actress for ‘Nuwebe’ in New York

"Munting Heredera" child star Barbara Miguel wins Best Actress in Harlem International Film Festival for film ‘Nuwebe’.

The 10-year-old actress was named as the youngest winner in this year's Harlem International Film Festival where she grabbed the Best Actress award in New York on September 15, Sunday.

Barbara plays the role of Krista, a young girl brought to motherhood at the age of 9.

"Nuwebe" (English Title: Termitaria) is inspired by the actual story of one of the youngest mothers in Philippine history. Krista was only 9-years old when she got pregnant from the sexual abuse perpetrated by her own father. Her mother believes that she was impregnated by malevolent supernatural creatures called “nuno sa punso” but the real story will prove to be more complicated than it seems.

Despite Krista's situation, she demonstrates an incredible level of resilience and determination to overcome the trauma of her past. Her mother on the other hand is torn between her love for her child and her love for her husband.

The film was first introduced in the Cinemalaya New Breed Category this year, written and directed by Joseph Israel Laban.

The award is Miguel's second acting citation after her triumph at the 61st Film Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards where she nabs "Best Child Actress" award for the independent film "Migrante" early this year.
